Enrolling New Hires

30-Day Notification Requirement

With few exceptions, all coverage changes-including new hire enrollment-must be submitted to SHOP within 30 days of the event.

For new hire enrollment, do not wait for the waiting period to expire before submitting the employee application to us. Submit this form within 30 days of the employee's start date and follow the instructions for new hire enrollment.

Effective Date of New Hires

The effective date of coverage for a new hire is based upon their hire date noted on the application, and the group's waiting period and coverage effective date. These are selected by the employer during open enrollment and renewal. Employees should contact their employer for this information.

Offering More Than One Plan Option?

Employers offering more than one plan option should give the employee a copy of their current employee enrollment instructions letter that was emailed to them during open enrollment or renewal period. To request a copy, email MNsure_SHOP@state.mn.us.

Employers with a 2016 Coverage Effective Date

The employee should complete a 2016 employee application and securely email it to us.
