Minnesotans Still Required to Have Health Insurance in 2018, or Pay Penalty

1/12/2018 7:34:55 AM

Midnight on January 14, is the deadline to enroll in 2018 private coverage through MNsure. Minnesotans who do not have health insurance in 2018, and don't qualify for an exemption, will still pay a federal tax penalty when they file their federal tax return by the filing deadline.

Most individuals, including children and anyone else claimed as a dependent on federal taxes, must have health insurance or pay a penalty. The individual /new-customers/whatis-mnsure/mandate/index.jsphealth coverage mandate, which requires individuals (without an /new-customers/whatis-mnsure/mandate/exemptions/index.jspexemption) to have health coverage, is still in effect for 2018 — meaning those without coverage in 2018 will pay a penalty.
