Tax Filing Status Changes for Adult Children

5/5/2022 3:28:57 PM

Changing an adult child from a tax dependent to a tax filer can be challenging. Here are some tips to make the process go more smoothly.

Tips:

  • If the adult child still lives with their parents but is no longer claimed as a dependent, the parent and adult child both need to report the tax filing status change.
  • To report the change, the adult child and the parent must attest that the child will be filing taxes independently.
  • If they still live in the same household, MNsure cannot remove an adult child from an existing application.
  • A tax filing status change cannot be completed until both parties attest to the tax filing status change.

Reporting the change:

If the assister has both the parent and adult child in the office, the changes can be reported online.

  • One tax filing status change would be for the parent stating they are no longer claiming the child.
  • One tax filing status change would be for the adult child stating if they are now a tax filer or non-filer.

If the assister only has the adult child or parent in the office, report the change online for the individual who is in the office.

  • Encourage the consumer to have the person who is not present call MNsure to report the change.
  • In the comments field, enter the phone number of the party who is not present so MNsure can contact them for their attestation and record the change.
