Loss of Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare

You may qualify for a special enrollment period (SEP) if you lose Medical Assistance (MA) or MinnesotaCare coverage. For example, you could lose MA or MinnesotaCare coverage if your income goes up and you no longer meet the income limits.

If you request that your MA or MinnesotaCare coverage ends (voluntarily), you will not qualify for a special enrollment period to sign up for a qualified health plan.

Key Dates

  • SEP begins: 60 days before the last day you or your dependent is covered by MA or MinnesotaCare.
  • SEP ends: Four months after your last day of MA or MinnesotaCare coverage, on the last day of the month.
  • When you can enroll: You can enroll any time during your SEP. To avoid a gap in your health care coverage, apply for this SEP during the 60 days before your last day of MA or Minnesota Care coverage.

January 31 May 31
February 28 or 29 June 30

August 31 December 31
September 30 January 31
October 31 February 28 or 29
November 30 March 31
