Cost-Sharing Limits for Chronic Diseases

If you have diabetes, asthma, or allergies that need an epi-pen: Minnesota law limits the amount you pay for prescription drugs and the medical supplies you need to treat your chronic disease.

For prescription drugs: The most you would have to pay is $25 for a one-month supply. This applies to each prescription drug to treat your chronic disease, if you have more than one.

For medical supplies: The most you would have to pay is $50 per month (total). This applies to the medical supplies related to your chronic disease medications.

Meeting your deductible

If you have a private health plan through MNsure, this benefit may not kick in right away. You may need to meet your health plan’s deductible before these limits will apply.

You must meet your health plan’s deductible first, if you have a:

  • Catastrophic plan
  • High-deductible health plan with a Health Saving Account (HSA) — these show as “HSA-Eligible” plans when you’re shopping at MNsure.org.

If you want access to this benefit from your first day of coverage: make sure to select a different type of plan.

One exception: Even if you have a high-deductible health plan with HSA, you can still get insulin at a lower cost before you meet your deductible. Learn more about getting lower-cost insulin at mninsulin.org.
