Enrolled in Coverage Outside of MNsure and Income Decreases
You may qualify for a special enrollment period (SEP) if:
- You have other health insurance (not through MNsure)
- Your income decreased, and you are now eligible for advanced premium tax credits
All of the following must be true:
- Your household's income recently decreased.
- You were enrolled in minimum essential coverage (not through MNsure) at least one day in the 60 days before your household income decreased.
- You are newly eligible for advanced premium tax credits.
Key Dates
- 60-day SEP begins: The day after your household income decreased. Your SEP can’t start until your income decreases.
- When you can enroll: During the 60-day window of your SEP, after we verify your qualifying life event.
- When your coverage starts: The first day of the month after your plan selection date.
Verification Documents
When you apply, the system will tell you what documents you must upload.
Be prepared to upload documents to show:
- Your household's income recently decreased
- You were enrolled in health care coverage for at least one day in the 60 days right before your income decreased.
Don’t wait—MNsure must receive your documents and have time to process them before you can pick a plan. You must select a plan before your 60-day SEP window expires.
