Special Circumstances

You may qualify for a special enrollment period (SEP) in these cases.

AmeriCorps Service

If you are an AmeriCorps member starting or ending your service.

  • 60-day SEP begins: Date of start or end of AmeriCorps service.
  • When you can enroll: During the 60-day window of your SEP, after we verify your qualifying life event.
  • When coverage starts: The first day of the month after your plan selection date. It cannot start before your AmeriCorps service starts.

Circumstances Beyond Your Control

If you couldn’t enroll because of something beyond your control, such as a natural disaster.

  • 60-day SEP begins: MNsure determines the start date, depending on the situation. 
  • When to enroll: Depends on your situation.
  • When coverage starts: Depends on your situation.

Not Eligible for Medical Assistance after Final Determination

If you apply for coverage and you are first determined eligible for Medical Assistance (MA) pending verification.

Later, your final eligibility decision is ineligible for MA. Instead, you are eligible for a qualified health plan through MNsure.

  • 60-day SEP begins: MNsure determines the start date, depending on the situation.
  • When to enroll: Depends on your situation.
  • When coverage starts: Depends on your situation.

Victim of Domestic Abuse or Spousal Abandonment

If you or your dependents are victims of domestic abuse or spousal abandonment.

  • 60-day SEP begins: When you ask for a special enrollment period for this reason.
  • When to enroll: During the 60-day window of your SEP.
  • When your coverage starts: The first day of the month after your plan selection date.
