Adjust Your APTC Amount

Premium tax credits are based on your estimated income for the year. But life rarely stays perfectly static. People who get advanced premium tax credits (APTC) may need to adjust their APTC during the year to keep their finances in balance.

Why Change Your APTC

A shift in your income is the most common reason. For example, if you get a raise, you may no longer qualify for the same amount of credit. Adjusting your APTC downward can help you avoid having to pay back a lot of money when you file your taxes. (Don’t forget: You must report any income changes to MNsure.)

If your income fluctuates (like a freelancer), you could choose to take only 50% of the tax credit you qualify for. This creates a cushion or “safety net,” so if you earn more than expected, you can prevent a big tax bill at the end of the year.

When You Can Change Your APTC

You can set or change your APTC amount when you first enroll.

You can also change it any time after you've finished enrollment, but it won't happen right away. If you change your APTC amount after your coverage has started, the new amount is effective the first day of the next month.

How to Adjust Your APTC

  • Select My Eligibility History from the dashboard navigation.
  • On the Eligibility Page, select View Your Plan Details.
  • Click the Adjust APTC button on the My Plan Details page.
  • Adjust the APTC amount by moving the slider (left or right) or tapping your arrow key (up or down) to the desired amount. Click Confirm.

Adjust APTC for Multiple Plans

If your household is enrolled in multiple medical plans, the APTC amount will be automatically divided among the eligible members and plans.

Adjusting APTC on one plan does not affect the APTC amounts on other plans. If you want to adjust APTC on multiple plans, you will need to do so on each plan, one at a time.

Apply Leftover APTC to a Dental Plan

To apply a leftover APTC amount toward a dental plan, you must:

  • Have at least one enrolled member of your household under the age of 19.
  • Choose a medical plan before any remaining APTC amount is applied to the pediatric portion of your dental plan.

For example, Joan's family has $600 APTC available. Their medical plan is $550 a month. Joan and her children, ages 15 and 10, enroll in a medical plan first and then enroll in a dental plan. Joan can apply the leftover $50 to the pediatric portion of her dental plan.
