When Can I Enroll?

Timing is everything when it comes to your health insurance.

  • Open enrollment period: This is the annual window each fall when anyone can sign up for a plan for next year. You don't need a specific reason to enroll during this time, but you must pick a plan by the deadline. Open enrollment for 2027 is November 1, - December 31, 2026.
  • Special enrollment period (SEP): If you miss open enrollment, you may still be able to sign up if you have a big life change, called a qualifying life event. Examples are getting married, moving to Minnesota, or losing your employer-sponsored coverage. Usually, you have 60 days from the date of the event to enroll.

Some people don’t have to meet these deadlines and can enroll at any time. This applies to you if:

  • You qualify for Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare. You can enroll any time of year
  • You are an American Indian or Alaska Native. Enrolled members of federally recognized tribes can sign up or change plans once per month, year-round. Learn more about tribal benefits
